    A Complete Guide to Understanding English Levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2

If you are planning to study English and need to identify your current level, you have probably come across labels such as A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2.
But what do these levels really mean, and how can you know which one is right for you?

At Time4London, we understand how confusing it can be to adapt to a new system. That is why we are here to make your English learning journey clearer and help you finally achieve your language goals.

What Is the CEFR English Level System?

The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) defines a six-level system used worldwide to measure English proficiency.
    It is recognised by:

    • Language learners
    • English academies and schools
    • Universities and colleges
    • Employers
    • Official exam providers

The CEFR framework ranges from A1 (beginner) to C2 (proficient user).

How Can I Know My English Level?

There are two main certification providers that follow the CEFR framework:

    • Cambridge
    • IELTS

Although their exam names differ, both align their results with the CEFR English levels.

    Cambridge English Levels Explained

Cambridge offers official English exams corresponding to the CEFR levels.

    Cambridge English Qualifications

    • A2 Key (A2) – Formerly known as KET
    • B1 Preliminary (B1) – Formerly known as PET
    • B2 First (B2) – Commonly known as FCE (First Certificate in English)
    • C1 Advanced (C1) – Also known as CAE (Certificate in Advanced English)
    • C2 Proficiency (C2) – Also known as CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English)

🔹 Note: Cambridge does not offer A1 exams for adults, only for children.
At Time4London, you can quickly progress from A1 to A2 with our tailored English courses.

    IELTS English Levels Explained

Unlike Cambridge, IELTS uses an open band scale, but its results are still mapped to CEFR levels from A1 to C2, depending on your score and purpose.

    Types of IELTS Exams

    • IELTS Academic (A1–C2)
Designed for academic studies or professional purposes.
    • IELTS General Training (A1–C2)
Suitable for general use and certain job requirements.
    • IELTS UKVI (A1–C2)
Required for UK visas related to work, study, or partner visas.
    • IELTS UKVI Life Skills (A1–B1)
A simplified test for UK visas such as family, spouse, settlement, or citizenship.

What Do the English Levels Mean? (Simple Explanation)

The CEFR levels are divided into three main categories:

    A Levels – Basic User

You can handle everyday situations, understand simple expressions, and communicate basic needs.

    B Levels – Independent User

You can communicate more confidently and fluently, understand complex conversations, and express ideas with fewer difficulties.

    C Levels – Proficient User

You have achieved an advanced level of English, suitable for academic and professional environments.

How Long Are English Certificates Valid?

    • Cambridge English certificates
They do not expire. You may update them by achieving a higher level.
    • IELTS certificates
They are officially valid for two years.
