Here are five incredible towns and cities you can reach in 60 minutes or less:
1. 🌊Brighton: London by the Sea
The journey: It is 50 minutes from London Bridge or London Victoria. The vibe here is creative, fun, and relaxing. Brighton is a favorite weekend trip for Londoners. It is famous for its rocky beach and the bright Brighton Pier, play fun games, ride rollercoasters, and eat fresh British fish & chips.
Do not miss: “The Lanes” This is a famous area with tiny, narrow streets, full of cool vintage clothes, music stores, and cute cafes. A great place to practice English while shopping. While you are there you should also visit the Royal Pavilion, it looks like a beautiful palace right in the middle of this seaside town.
2. 🎓Oxford: The City of famous students
The journey: It takes 55 minutes from London Paddington. The vibe is historic, quiet, and magical. Have you ever dreamt about being part of a Harry Potter movie? ⚡️ Oxford is home to the oldest university in the English-speaking world. The buildings are so old and beautiful, it feels like traveling back in time.
Do not miss: Christ Church College. Many ideas and scenes from the Harry Potter movies came from this beautiful school. If you want some extra adrenaline, try “Punting” on the river, it is a traditional boat ride where you push the boat using a long wooden pole. It is very fun!
3. 🏛️St Albans: A walk into ancient history
The journey: Only 20 minutes from London St Pancras. The vibe is peaceful, green, and very traditional. For a quick trip away from the noise of London, St Albans is perfect. A very long time ago, it was one of the biggest Roman cities in Britain!
Do not miss: Verulamium Park. Take a walk around a beautiful lake and see real ancient Roman walls. After, visit St Albans Cathedral, a giant, stunning historic church. If you are visiting on a Wednesday or Saturday go to the Charter Market. This outdoor market is over 1,000 years old! The perfect place to talk to friendly local sellers and buy fresh food. 🍎
4. 🏫Cambridge: Rivers and Renaissance
The journey: It is 48 minutes from London King’s Cross. If what you want is intellectual, scenic, and grand. Similar to Oxford, Cambridge is world-famous for its university. A stunning city where you can walk through medieval colleges and see the incredible King’s College Chapel.
Do not miss: The Mathematical Bridge. It is a famous wooden bridge that stays together without any nuts or bolts. Also, be sure to rent a bicycle. Cambridge is known as the “cycling capital”, and it is the best way to see the colleges quickly.
5. 👑Windsor: The Royal Escape
The journey: It takes 55 minutes from London Waterloo. The vibe is regal, charming, and classic. Windsor is home to the famous Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. It is where the King often spends his weekends!
